As January 1, 2024 approaches, residents of Dubai can expect a big shift. The Crown Prince of Dubai, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has made a ground-breaking announcement regarding the impending ban on single-use plastic bags throughout the city.
With the emirate ardently embracing a more ecologically conscious approach, this ban represents a major step towards a more sustainable and greener future.
Single-use plastic bag imports and sales inside city limits will be banned as of January 1. Certain thin-film rolls used to package perishable goods like meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, grains, and bread are an exception to this rule. Furthermore, the ban will not apply to garbage bags.

According to reports from WAM, the state news agency, there will be more strict prohibitions in the upcoming years. Dubai is going to expand its ban on single-use plastic products to include non-plastic ones, such as bags made of substitute materials, as of June 1, 2024.
A comprehensive ban on a variety of single-use plastic products, such as stirrers, tablecloths, cups, Styrofoam food containers, straws, and plastic cotton swabs, will subsequently take effect on January 1, 2025.
If current trends continue, January 1, 2026, will see the introduction of a more comprehensive ban that will include plastic cups, tableware, food containers, and plates.
The ban in Dubai’s first phase is mainly directed at single-use plastic bags. A Dhs200 fine will be imposed for noncompliance. Penalties for repeat infractions within a year will increase, doubling up to a maximum fine of Dhs2,000.
The resolution will be formally published in the Official Gazette and take effect on January 1, 2024.
This innovative policy outperforms the 2022 introduction of a 25-fil fee for single-use plastic bags, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
An example of how such green policies are having a knock-on effect is Abu Dhabi, where a ban on single-use plastic bags has been in place since June 2022.
According to the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, the ban remarkably reduced the use of single-use plastic by almost 95% in just the first year of its implementation.
Dubai is leading the way in a paradigm change towards sustainability. The city calls on its citizens to embrace this environmentally conscious journey towards a cleaner and healthier future for future generations, and with every step it takes, it aims to weave a greener narrative.
